DO YOU AGREE?? The Headies Lost Its Credibility After That Olamide And Don Jazzy Beef In 2015
For a decade and half, The Headies been the standard for Nigerian music.
The Nigerian Grammy’s as they call it, the Award show gained momentum in the late 2000s when the new afro-pop scene began to develop.
By the time it was 2013, artists like WizKid, Davido, and Olamide had gotten recognition from the organizers and The Headies had established itself as the ultimate music Award show in the Nigerian music industry. And the run was beautiful, with all the recognition, and the drama, it was all fun. Until it wasn’t anymore.
In 2015, trouble came into paradise when they failed to give Lil Kesh the Next Rated award, but instead gave it to Reekado Banks, who at the time was under Mavin Records.
Olamide, a street guy who didn’t care for anybody, took the stage that night and declared that Lil Kesh is the Next Rated. “Street ti take over,” he yelled in his famous rant.
Don Jazzy, the Mavin huncho took the diss personally and the next opportunity he had, he called out Olamide. “If you want the car, come and collect it,” he said. That night, for many, was fun. But for The Headies, it was a disaster.
The year that followed, celebrities boycotted The Headies show and in 2017, Tekno rejected their nomination, in what could only mean artists didn’t rate them anymore. In 2018, the show couldn’t even hold, and that was the end of an era.
The Headies is back now and they’re thriving again, but the truth is, unless artists win, they don’t care for them anymore. For example, will Davido attend the show this year? Will Mayorkun? No, they won’t. Kizz Daniel won’t. And, so many others unless they’re sure of winning.
These days, the only people that care for the award are the new artists. And that decline all started in 2015 when two of the most influential people in the industry had a fight on their stage.
